The first thing you learn when living with endometriosis is that nobody knows this illness better than you. The second thing you learn is that despite knowing millions of people around the world suffer from endometriosis, ultimately you are going through your pain and suffering alone, because the pain of endo affects each of us differently.

In the course of trying to manage endometriosis, you will interact with doctors and surgeons, who then prescribe medication or treatments. This of course puts you in touch with pharmaceutical companies and the politics of surgical preference in treating endometriosis.

This is why it is so important to Be Aware – you need to be aware of what doctors and surgeons are telling you, what pharmaceutical ads are telling you, what support groups, forums and anything on the Internet is telling you, what books are telling you, and what alternative medicine practitioners are telling you.

It is important that no matter what anyone tells you about endometriosis or the treatment of this illness, you cannot believe they are telling you the whole truth. You must seek out the truth for yourself, because unfortunately when dealing with endometriosis, the truth is subjective.

Does the advice, treatment or medication you are being offered ring true for YOU and what YOU are going through with endometriosis? Has your doctor taken your whole relationship, living and work situation into account when attempting to treat your endometriosis, or is your doctor merely a tool for a pharmaceutical or surgical equipment dealer – is your doctor trying to get kickbacks by performing so many types of treatments or prescribing so much of a medication?

Mankoski Pain Scale

0 - Pain Free

1 - Very minor annoyance - occasional
minor twinges. No medication needed.

2 - Minor Annoyance - occasional
strong twinges.
No medication needed.

3 - Annoying enough to be distracting.
Mild painkillers take care of it.
(Aspirin, Ibuprofen.)

4 - Can be ignored if you are really
involved in your work, but still
distracting. Mild painkillers remove
pain for 3-4 hours.

5 - Can't be ignored for more than 30
minutes. Mild painkillers ameliorate
pain for 3-4 hours.

6 - Can't be ignored for any length of
time, but you can still go to work and
participate in social activities.
Stronger painkillers (Codeine,
narcotics) reduce pain for 3-4 hours.

7 - Makes it difficult to concentrate,
interferes with sleep. You can still
function with effort. Stronger
painkillers are only partially effective.

8 - Physical activity severely limited.
You can read and converse with effort.
Nausea and dizziness set in as factors
of pain.

9 - Unable to speak. Crying out or
moaning uncontrollably - near delirium.

10 - Unconscious. Pain makes you
pass out.
